A few reminders...

Tomorrow is a Food Bank Mass, along with our Crowning of Mary so we are asking students to bring both food items as well as flowers that will be laid at the front of the church around her statue.  Also, tomorrow we will be having our Panorama School Photo taken, weather permitting so please be sure your child has their sweater and full-uniform.  THANK YOU!!!

You should have also received a few notes...there is a purple note to be returned to school that asks about a Father's Day event, similar to what we did for Mother's Day.  We need to know how many fathers (or special men) would be able to make it to our event, before we go ahead and plan it.  Those purple forms are due on Friday.  Also, our blue permission slip for Aldor Acres, along with $6 is due on Friday.  Our school is also have a used uniform sale so if you have any pieces you wish to sell or donate, please send them to the office on Friday.

You should have also received a note last week outlining some fundraising events that our Grade 7s are doing for a school in Africa.  As we hope to support this cause, we will not be having Popcorn sales on Wednesdays in June.  Please see their note or our website to see what fundraising activity is happening on which day and thank you for your generousity and support.

And finally, we are doing some measuring in our classroom so I sent home an activity sheet where students need to measure 10 items, write their findings down and then bring it back to school.  Any student who hands this form in on Monday will receive a treat but please note that this is an optional activity.  The students have had fun measuring in our classroom so we thought we'd try it at home as well.  Thank you for your help!

As the weather is a little rainy, please make sure your send a jacket to school with your child as we will often still go outside (we need the fresh air at this point of the year :o) and please make sure they are labelled. After each recess, we find at least three items with no names and we are getting a huge collection at the office.  Pieces not claimed are donated so if you want it back, please ensure your name is on it.  THANK YOU!

Have a great evening and God bless!

HAPPY PENTECOST!!!

On Sunday, we celebrated Pentecost-the coming of the Holy Spirit-and the end of the Easter Season.  We have spent the last 50 days in Kindergarten discussing what it meant when Jesus rose from the dead so long ago but also what it means for us today.  We are all called to share the Good News and to serve with Joyful Hearts so, although we now return back to Ordinary Time, we hope that we don't go back to our ordinary ways. We want to maintain our excitment and love of Jesus throughout the year so I hope you can take some time to talk to your child about things they can do to show God's love and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Just a few reminders...

On Friday, you should have received a permission slip for our fieldtrip to Aldor Acres for Thursday, June 21st.
Please note that permissions slips, along with $6.00, are due this Friday, June 1st.
As mentioned on the form, we are in need of 12 parent supervisors.  On Friday, we will see which parents from Grade One and Kindergarten would like to go and then we randomly select names to be our helpers.  In the past, we often get many parents who wish to join us on these fieldtrips and we apologize that we are unable to accomodate everyone.  We do have tickets for our helpers and you will be responsible for a group of five students (please note that supervisors should not be bringing any siblings as they will need to remain with their group of students at all times).  Since space is limited, you may not be selected to be a supervisor but you can still purchase your own ticket (please see permission form for the cost of adults as well as children in case you need to bring a sibling).  Tickets can be purchased on the day of the fieldtrip and you would give your money directly to myself (or Miss Da Cruz) as Aldor Acres will only accept one cheque from us (they do not handle individual ticket sales).  If you are not selected but would still like to attend, please let me now just so I am aware of numbers and cost, so I can inform Aldor Acres of what to expect.  THANK YOU!!!

You should have also received a note for your family from the Grade 7s that outlined some of the fundraising they will be doing over the next few weeks for a school in Africa that burned down over Easter.  If you know Mrs. Macht, one of our retired Learning Support Teachers, her daughter recently visited the school and helped us become aware of their needs.  On Monday, there is a Bake Bake Sale and then next week, there will be a Non-Uniform Day on Monday, Lemondade on sale on Wednesday and Bracelets on sale on Thursday.  If you simply want to make a donation, please just send any money or cheques and we will make sure it goes directly to this school.  THANK YOU!

Congratulations again to Anna for being a wonderful Star of the Week and for sharing so much of herself with the class.  Here are some things that were said about her...

She is beautiful!
She is a mega cool friend.
(I wasn't there when they wrote these sentences...what happened to the apples???)
She is pretty!
She has a great imagination.
She is an awesome friend.

We now say CONGRATULATIONS to Crissa for being our next Star of the Week.  How wonderful it is to celebrate all the things that make us special and unique.  Keep shining, all you stars!

It's hard to believe that we have so few actual school days left but they are sure to be busy ones, especially with Fun Day, Talent Show, our trip to Aldor Acres and all the other fun things that June has to offer!  I hope you enjoy the last few days of the month of Mary (perhaps a rosary can be said somewhere in there) and I wish you all a very happy June. God bless!

HAPPY ASCENSION!!!

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and that everyone was able to take some time to celebrate the Ascension of our Lord on Sunday.  The Easter Season is almost over as it is Pentecost this Sunday but, as we talked about today during Religion, we are all called to serve the Lord (with a joyful heart).  Just because Easter is over does not mean our work is done...we are all disciples of God and I am thrilled to see the students looking for little things to do in class to spread God's love. Saying a kind word to a classmate, picking up litter from the floor or cleaning the classroom without being asked...so many little things but done with great love.  What an amazing bunch!  There are only 25 school days and while it is exciting that holidays are almost here, I am already feeling sad thinking about losing this group...they really are a special class and I love every minute with them!

I realize most of you probably won't see this in time but we do have our panorama photo tomorrow of all the students in our school.  This means that all students MUST have their red sweaters for the photo and they should be in full uniform (all of which they should be everyday :o)  I'm not quite sure of the time yet but please remind your child to bring their smile and again, be in full uniform.  On that note, it is also Popcorn Wednesday as well as the last day to buy Eastergrams.  THANK YOU!

Just a reminder to PLEASE continue labelling all items that come to school.  With the weather getting nicer, students will sometimes wear their jackets but then take them off where they get left behind and so often, there are no names.  Today, we had a shirt left behind after PE class and we couldn't figure out who it belonged to so if you want it to come back home, please make sure everything has your child's name on it.  Thank you :o)  (PS  That includes water bottles as well :o)

I've also noticed that there are many students who seem to be extra hungry lately.  Perhaps it is growing season but it has been like this for a few weeks where they will often ask me if we can eat earlier and earlier...sometimes, just after getting to school.  We have students who will eat all of their snack and then will beg me to eat their lunch :o) and then will eat their lunch and still say they are hungry.  If you child is coming home with a completely empty lunch kit, you may want to talk to them and perhaps send one more item just in case.  If you have a child who is not eating as much as you would like or not drinking enough water, especially on our warm days, please let me know so I can keep a closer eye on them as well.  THANKS!  I also really am hoping that each student can come to school with a water bottle each day...so often, we will run around outside or go to PE and the students come back very thirsty.  Students can only go down the hall to the water fountain during free time but if they have a water bottle in the classroom, they can drink from it whenever they want.  As it becomes warmer, it's really important to keep everyone hydrated so please keep this in mind. On very hot days, I also have sunscreen that I have for students if they need it before they go out for lunch recess...I ask them if they would like any as it is completely optional and then they put it on but if you do not want your child wearing any from school, please let me know.  I know it's hard to keep sunscreen on for the full day on kids, especially if we have had PE in the morning, so I always keep some at school for those who may need it on those super sunny days.

Congratulations to Mackenzie for being a great Star of the Week and for sharing more of herself with us.  It was great to celebrate why she is so special and here are a few things her classmates said...

She is an awesome friend.
She sits well on the carpet.
She is beautiful!
She likes apples.  (Oh those apples are back!!!)
She plays well at recess.

This week, we will be celebrating Anna but we remind all of our stars to always remember to shine!

I hope you all enjoy the rest of our week...God bless you!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!

Happy Mother's Day to you all!  I hope you were all spoiled as you deserve it and I would also like to thank everyone who was able to attend our tea on Friday.  It was a wonderful turn out and the children loved being able to celebrate the special ladies in their lives.  Thank you for spending the time with us!  We are also  hoping to see if we can find a time in June where we can also invite the special men in our lives to come celebrate with us as well so please stay tuned.

On that note, the Kindergarten and Grade One class are planning a fieldtrip in June together. We are hoping to go to Aldor Acres for the day and it looks like we will be going on Thursday, June 21st.  More information, as well as permission slips, should be coming home very shortly but please keep this date in mind if you wish to spend the day with us as well.

This week, CCS is having auditions for our Talent Show.  Students in Kindergarten who signed up will receive a note in their blue folder on Monday and their auditions will be held at lunchtime on Thursday.  Mrs. Lewis and myself are the organizers of the Talent Show so if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.  Kindergarten students can sometimes be overwhelmed when it comes to the actual performance so please talk to your child that they feel comfortable to perform on the stage and they understand what it will be like for them.  Again, any questions, please let me know.  We'd like to get through all the auditions by Thursday.

Thank you once again to all the students who continue to do so well with their Word Family Study Book as well as their Little Readers!!!  I am really trying to encourage the students to get into the routine of having their Little Readers IN their backpack each day as we never know when we have a few minutes to pull them out and read with a friend...please try to help your child in this area.  I think it is wonderful if you are able to practice your books at home but we really need them to be in our classroom each day so please try to get in the habit of always returning them to their backpacks after they have been read.  Due to our tea, it was a rushed Little Reader Book Exchange on Friday but I hope next week will be a little smoother and that we will have a time to check off all our their reading logs. Thanks again!!!

Another reminder that they will be selling both Popcorn for 50 cents and Eastergrams for $1.00 on Wednesday.  Please send any money in a labelled baggie. THANK YOU!

I realized that when I was away at the track meet last Friday, I forgot to post our sentences about our Star of the Week.  So for this blog, we wish to celebrate both Samuel and Ysabella who continue to shine brightly in Kindergarten.  This is what their classmates had to say about them...

Samuel is handsome!
He sits nicely on the carpet.
He is an awesome friend.
He is a cool friend!
He is a spectacular friend!

Ysabella is beautiful!
She is a good friend.
She sits at the carpet quietly.
She is a cool friend.
She is an awesome friend.

Congratulations to both of these students for being wonderful stars and we hope they always shine.  We also say congratulations to Mackenzie who will be in our new star this week.

Just a reminder that there is no school on Friday as it is a Professional Development Day and then there is no school on Monday as it is Victoria Day.  I hope you all have a fantastic long weekend and that this amazing sunshine lasts.  Thank you also to everyone who was able to attend our auction on Saturday Night as this is a very important fundraiser to our school and both your support and generousity are truly appreciated.  We hope you had a great time and yet another reminder that this weekend is the Cloverdale Rodeo so we will be talking about this event in our classroom as well. Have a great week!  God bless you all!

Happy Long Weekend!

I hope everyone has been enjoying the extra day off this week and that you had a nice weekend.  It's hard to believe that May is here and that we only have 38 ACTUAL SCHOOL DAYS LEFT!!!  Wow!  Just a few odds and ends again to keep in mind over the next little while...

  • Our school is hosting a track meet on Wednesday from 12:30 until 4:30pm so please keep in mind that we will have several schools visiting us and our parking lot will likely be VERY full during end of the day pickup.
  • Popcorn for 50 cents and EasterGrams for $1.00 will once again be sold on Wednesday.  EasterGrams will be delivered the Friday before Pentecost so time is running out to buy them :o)  Please keep in mind that all money raised goes towards our school's sponsor child, Catalina.
  • Mother's Day Tea: I realize I wrote the wrong date on my last blog but our Mother's Day Tea is STILL on Friday, May 11th at 1:30pm in the Parish Center (Columbus/Cenecle Room).  Thank you to everyone who has sent in their RSVP as we do need to know who is attending and we apologize but we only have space for one special lady per child. If you have not sent in your RSVP, please do so as soon as possible!!!  THANK YOU!
  • We are in need of empty, clean, label-less baby food jars...if you have any and can send them in, we need them by Thursday, May 3rd.  THANK YOU!
  • It's time to sign up for the TALENT SHOW!!!  Our Talent Show is on Friday, June 8th and we are looking for students who would like to share their talent with the school, such as doing a dance or playing an instrument.  If your child is interested, please let me know and I will help them to fill out the sign up sheet outside the office this week.  Sign up takes place until Friday and then students will be notified of an audition time in the next two weeks.  Stay tuned for more information about this but please talk about the Talent Show with you child in case they wish to participate.  Thank you!
  • Thank you again to everyone who is diligently keeping up with their "HomeFun" and are doing their work in their Word Study Book.  The students have been doing SO WELL and I am also impressed with how well they are printing the words, especially since these are the same lines they will use in Grade One.  Way to go, Kindergarten!!!
  • Thank you to those who expressed interest in having Sight Words sent home with their child to work on at their own pace...I'll be sending them this week and you can use them as you see fit according to your child's ability.
  • I also will be sending home "Little Readers" on Thursday or Friday...please see the note in the baggies to explain their purpose and how they can be used.
  • I am looking for helpers to take home a bin of toys on Friday to be washed.  I will TRY to remember to leave them on the blue bunch and then you can help yourself if you are able to wash them for us.   Thank you in advance!!!
  • Congratulations to Christopher for being such a wonderful Star of the Week...it was great to learn more about him and to celebrate why he is so special.  This is what his classmates had to say...
He is handsome!
He is an awesome friend.
He is a MAGNIFICENT friend. (A NEW juicy word for us in Kindergarten...yay!)
He plays nicely at recess.
He is awesome at being quiet.

Thank you, Christopher!  We look forward to celebrating Samuel this week and learning about him.

I think that is it...have a fantastic week and God bless you all!

Odds and Ends

Just a few little odds and ends I thought I'd mention...

  • WORD STUDY BOOKS: Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to review our Word Family words with your child and have encouraged them to practice printing them in their books.  When we did our review on Friday, I was FLOORED with how many students really knew the words and could spell them independently.  WOW!  WHAT A START!!! Also, I truly appreciate the time you have taken with your child to ensure that they are properly using the top, middle and bottom lines for each word as their printing has been AMAZING!  I only had hoped for the children to write the words once but I saw many books that had the students writing the words several times so whatever works for you is best :o) Please note that books should always be returned on Fridays so that we have them for Monday morning.  I hope that this activitiy does not take too much time and helps to establish a routine for doing some school work at home as this will certainly help with preparations for Grade One. Again, THANK YOU and I am thrilled with the student's enthusiasm to look at word families and practice sounding out words.
  • LITTLE READERS: This week, I am also hoping to send home something I call "Little Readers," which is a routine I used to do with my Grade Ones when I taught that grade. I will send home an information note about Little Readers but I thought I would give you a heads up.  Each week, your child will receive three little books that are levelled, meaning that they go from easy and progress to harder as we go along. All students are at different levels and I am hoping over the next few weeks, the students can begin moving through the different levels and will begin to develop their own reading skills further.  Most of the activities around Little Readers will take place in the classroom but I do send them home so that families have the opportunites to read the books with their child as well.  Most often, we will need them in the classroom so they should always be in your child's backpack. One of the most features to this activity is to get students excited about reading so the books start very simply and follow a pattern, so students should feel very successful.  I am hoping to encourage a further love of reading in the students and I hope Little Readers will be a fun way for them to look at words and sentences and develop their skills.  Please stay tuned for more information.
  • SIGHT WORDS:  Now that we have finished our Letter of the Week routine, we have started to look at Sight Words that we often see in print.  Last week, we learned about 'a', 'I' and 'the.'  This week, we will continue to build on this rountine and learn even more words as Sight Words are those words that occur very frequently but often can not be sounded out.  I do have Sight Word Lists that could be sent home for families who wish to review these words with their child or wish to challenge those who are interested.  If you think that you would like to begin to do Sight Word Lists at home, please let me know and I can send home information about how we do this in Kindergarten.  Please note that this is completely OPTIONAL and that I am not sending Sight Words home to every child so you will not receive any letters about this. This is simply if you personally want to challenge your child and you feel it is in their best interest to begin looking at Sight Words.  If you send me a note or email, I will then send you more information how you can practice these words at your child's own individual pace at home. I already have one student who has been practicing Sight Words for a few months now as she wanted to do extra work at home but please know that I do consider this EXTRA and is not my expectation for students to be doing this in Kindergarten.  It is whatever works best for you and your family.  Thank you!
  • MOTHER'S DAY: Mothers, you should have received an invitation to our Mother's Day Event on May 12th.  Students from Kindergarten and Grade One are inviting their moms (or if you are not able to attend, another special lady in your child's life) to come and celebrate the gift of mothers with us.  We will be having refreshments and have a few small presentaions so we hope as many of you as possible can join us on this afternoon.  Please RSVP as soon as possible as we need to know how many are attending as well as if babysitters are needed. Thank you!
  • SECRETARY'S DAY: On Wednesday, it is Secretary's Day and at CCS, we are SO blessed to have two AMAZING ladies who keep the school running smoothly.  Mrs. Antonio and Mrs. Sturgeon do SO MUCH for our school and we are hoping to recognize them on this day.  On Wednesday morning, if possible, please send a flower (or flowers) to school with your child.  I am hoping to make two bouquets from the flowers that the children bring in and then we will take them down to the office to present to our secretaries.  And if you see either of our secretaries, please take a moment to wish them well and to thank them for all they do.  I am constantly amazed at how much they do for not only for our school but for all the students.  God bless you, Mrs. Antonio and Mrs. Sturgeon!!!
  • POPCORN and EASTER EGG SALE: Just a reminder that on Wednesday, we will have popcorn on sale for 50 cets and Easter Egg Grams for $1.00.   Thank you!
  • FOOD BANK MASS: This Friday, we will have a Food Bank Mass. Our goal is to bring in two items per child so that we will be able to bring in 60 items and beat our record of 56. Thank you for your generousity!!!
  • STAR OF THE WEEK:  Thank you again to Alexander for being a wonderful Star of the Week.  Here are a few things his classmates had to say about him...
He is handsome!
He sits well on the carpet.
He is an awesome friend.
He is a very good friend.
He plays well at recess.

Great work, Alexander! We now say congratulations to Christopher
who is our current star of the week. We will continue to look for ways
to celebrate why he is so special and to all our stars...keep shining!

I think those are all the reminders that I have for now. Again, please let me know if your have any questions or concerns.  We continue to do calendar in our classroom and we have only 43 actual days of school left so we are starting to get close to the end of the year.  Thank you for your continued to support and understanding and I hope the next few weeks are fun and happy for us all. God bless!

Happy Earth Day!

This Sunday is Earth Day!  This week, we have been discussing different ways to take care of the earth and we have focussed on ways that we can REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE.  I am encouring the students to look at things both at home and school that involve taking care of the earth and I would encourage you to discuss this with your child as well.  Some of the things we have noticed have been how many families send reusable containers at lunch and how many students have reuseable water bottles as our garbage can overflows on a Hot Lunch day but has hardly anything on a regular lunch day.  THANK YOU, PARENTS!!!  Also, many students talked about how they take old toys and clothes and give them away so that they can be reused by others.  This act of service really helps young children to see how they can take things and reuse them to help those in need.  Our students are also very eager to ensure they recycle any scrap paper as well as juice boxes in our classroom so it seems like our students are well on their way to really knowing how to take care of the earth.  Please take some time on Sunday to celebrate our earth...perhaps a walk or maybe plant some flowers or even pick up litter around your neighbourhood...this small things all matter and are noticed by your children!

Speaking of your children, they are AMAZING (as if you didn't know that already!)  This week, we started our Word Family Study Book and I have to say that I have had SO MANY of the students share how EXCITED they are to finally have HOMEWORK (aka HomeFUN because it's SO MUCH FUN!!!)  Students have been asked to take their word books and each night, review the words.  I labelled the pages so that your child would know where they could practice writing their words on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  On Friday, we will do something like a Spelling Test to see if they know the words, if they can print them and read them.  This is our first time doing something like this so we will see how it goes and if we need to do more work in the classroom around these words, we will.  If you are able to review the words with your child at home, that is a huge help and I can certainly see which students are doing the extra review with their families. If you are unable to review the words with your child each nigh, please let me know and we will find a way to do it in class.  There are many benefits to this activity as it helps to establish a home routine (students do get homework in Grade One), they get to practice writing the words using the correct lines (also something they do in Grade One), they are introduced to different word families and can build words using a familiar pattern and they are able to use the sounds that we have focussed on during term one and two to begin blending together to make new words.  I also hope your child enjoys the activity as so many of them have been asking me to give them homework since we started Kindergarten.  I think we need to record them saying such things so we can replay it back to them when they are in Grade 7...they actually WANTED homework...hahaha!  Thank you to everyone who has been able to take the time to review the words-I so appreciate your time and support!

Just a quick reminder that Scholastic orders were due today but I won't place the order until Friday in case anyone else would like to get their forms in.  I know we are approaching summer vacation (45 more school days and yes, we are counting...that is what we do in Kindergarten) and I know some families like to order books that can be used over the holidays to keep up some routine and interest.  There will be one more order form that will come home next month, for those who are interested.  And I think we received all of our mite boxes and donations...if you had anything left, this Friday would be the absolute last date. Thank you again for those who were able to return the boxes-we have written a letter to our seminarians and they GREATLY appreciate all we do for them.  And Popcorn will continue to be sold on Wednesdays, along with our EasterGram Eggs for $1.00.  The actual candy eggs will be delivered just before Pentecost but students can buy an egg to be sent to anyone in the school.  Eggs are sold on Wednesdays only, although I am the person in charge so I'm sure if your child wanted to buy one on a different day, I could make that happen :o)  Thank you again-all money raised goes towards our school's sponsor child-Catalina!

And we weren't able to draw the name of our new star of the week until Monday but he was able to get all of his papers in by Tuesday so we are currently celebrating ALEXANDER this week and we congratulate him on being such a special star.  I can't wait to see what his classmates have to say about him on Friday...perhaps it will involve apples :o)  Congratulations again, Alexander!  Keep shining!

And those Canucks...they certainly are keeping us on the edge of our seats with their recent play-off games.  Since we are STILL in the playoffs (which I hope we will be for a looooooong time), if you have any Canuck pictures from the newspaper that your child might want to bring in, we have a bulletin board that we can add the pictures too and then we can discuss them.  We are tracking the progress of the Canucks, along with the other teams in the playoffs so any newspaper clippings that might be of interested are welcomed. Thank you!

I am also in need of some empty baby food jars...we need about 60 of them so if you are able to donate some, please send them in at your convenience. I would need them by May 1st. Thank you!

A few parents have also been asking me about skorts and gym shorts as it can be difficult and uncomfortable for the students on PE Days.  I have no problem with the students just want to just wear their skorts as their shorts and I will talk to Mr. Klaponski to let him know what I have told you.  I know it can be both hot and hard to undo buttons with skorts and shorts on together so as long as your child is comfortable doing PE in their skorts, they can just wear those on our PE Days.  I have also told the students that while it is getting warmer, we still sometimes have dizzle so jackets should keep coming to school but I am now giving them the option of leaving them inside if they are too hot at recess.  Sweaters should ALWAYS be at school but I am also encouraging students to just leave them in their backpack as it can get quite warm in our classroom and outside at times.  Please ensure all items are labelled, especially any new summer uniform pieces. Thank you!

And finally, we have spent time this week talking about emergencies such as fire drills, earthquake drills, fainting and other medical emergencies.  While it is important that our students know what to do so that they are prepared, I also know that this can make some student a little anxious.  While I try to tell them that these things will probably be something that we never have to worry about, it is important that we have talked about it and role played different scenarios so we know what to do.  The students did a practice fire drill without me leading them and they were outstanding so I'm thrilled to see them be so responsible and prepared. But I just wanted to mention it in case you want to talk to them further about these things.  Again, the last thing I want to do is to cause your child to worry and I really do try to emphasize that by being prepared, we have nothing to worry about but sometimes these things can make children nervous.  We usually have a few practice fire drills in the spring as the weather gets nicer so it is something that we will continue to review and I hope that your child just feels safe and prepared.

Thank you, again and I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.  Please keep our Grade 7 students in your prayers as they will be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation this Friday and CONGRATULATIONS again to all the Grade 2s who received their First Communion last weekend.  And we continue to enjoy Easter Egg Hunts in our classroom with different grades as we want to continue to celebrate the joy of the Easter Season. He is risen!  Alleluia!
